UCLA Humanities Division publishes article on Tony Yates and John Clayton’s work on new Hittite database

Published: November 2, 2026

UCLA Humanities has published a feature on the Morphologically and Phonologically Annotated Database of Hittite (MPADH), led by Anthony Yates (PhD, IES 2017), with the website infrastructure built by John Clayton, Lecturer in Indo-European Studies. Supported by UCLA DataX and the Cunard Center for Global Antiquity, the project has catalogued 1.2 million Hittite words from dictionaries and more than 30,000 tablets, each segmented into root and affixes so the corpus can be searched by morpheme. Clayton is developing the site with computer science students Sparsh Johri and Austin Gao, while the content team includes graduate students Sabrina Hart, Aidan Holmgren, Natalie Rudin and Caitlin Smith and undergraduate Christina Ginger. An open-access release is planned for the end of 2027.
