Muhammad Rehan and Laura McLean awarded Keck Fellowship

Published: May 14, 2024

Congratulations to our graduate students Muhammad Rehan and Laura McLean along with Tom Francis (Classics) and Klaus Kim (Linguistics) for being awarded the UCLA/Keck Humanistic Inquiry Research Award for their collaborative project titled “Down to the Core: Issues with the Cognacy Encoding of the IE-CoR Database”. Their project will examine the data encoded in the new IE-CoR database of lexical cognates to identify and fix systematic problems with the encoding of the cognacy data.  This will ensure that the data is optimized for analyzing Indo-European language change at a time when the use of databases is on the rise and challenging much of the traditional wisdom in the field.

Congratulations, Rehan and Laura!
